South Downs Way Relay - Interested?

(June 04, 2016)

South Downs Way Relay

Calling all ‘off road’ runners who would like a fantastic day out running along the South Downs Way with a group of fellow Harriers.  This year the South Downs Way Relay takes place on Saturday 4th June – details on the official website (http://www.southdownsrelay.co.uk).  For those of you that haven’t heard of this before, the race entails groups of 6 runners running the entire length of the South Downs Way from Eastbourne to Winchester.  This is a run of just under 100 miles split between 6 runners averaging just over 16 miles each in 3 legs each of anything from 4 to 8.5 miles.  Anyone who is capable of running a half marathon should consider doing this – it really is a great event, last year there were 67 teams running along the Downs finishing with a BBQ and presentation party at a sports field just outside Winchester – and in recent years it has been mostly sunny!  It’s a long day out – leaving Haywards Heath at 4 in the morning and getting back at 11 in the evening, and you need to spend time reccying your legs beforehand – but you’ll end up with a smile on your face and something talk about for many days to come.

We are entering 3 teams this year:

A team (captained by Tom Mullen) – aiming for a top 3 finish, recruiting the best runners in the club.

Ladies team (captained by Michelle Pearce) – also pushing for a high finish.

B team (captained by Tim Hicks) – a mixture of men/women/seniors/vets/new members/old members aiming for a decent finish and a fun day out – if we have some fast runners we can also accommodate some slower runners and still beat the cut-off, so if you’re not sure you’re quick enough talk to me anyway.

We need 6 runners per team, 2 reserve runners per team (reserves usually end up running!), and 2 drivers per team.  The club pays the entry fee and each runner pays about £30 to cover minibus hire, petrol etc.  If anyone is interested please get in touch with any of the three captains and we can give you more details.
