HHH success at YDL

(April 18, 2015)
Last Saturday (18th April) saw the first fixture of the Youth Development League 2015 for U17 and U20 boys and girls.  Haywards Heath Harriers were competing as Team Sussex, together with Lewes AC and East Grinstead AC and took the long trip to Southampton to compete.  Despite a cold wind, all the athletes performed brilliantly, but the star of the show must go to Simeon Cousins who won the U20 A string 200m with a fantastic 23.4 personal best and ran 52.5 in the U20 400m for 3rd place in the A string - a great start to the 2015 season.  Not to be outdone my Simeon, Harrison Bird achieved a massive pb in the U17M 1500m with a time of 4:56.9, knocking an incredible 46 seconds off his previous best to finish 6th in the A string, and ran a sound 800m A string in 2:24.3, some 16 seconds off his previous best.  Patrick Kenward also achieved a pb in the U17M 800m B string to finish second with 2:33.8 and ran a solid 62.9 for his first ever 400m, finishing 4th in the B string.  Gutsy performance of the afternoon goes to U17 athlete Christian Lambert who competed in his first ever 100m hurdle race.  As an U15, Christian was showing great form over the 80m hurdles and reduced his pb time down to a very respectable 13.1, however, completing in the U17M 100m hurdles over 10 flights that were higher than he had competed at before and the distance between them further, Christian was going to need all the mental strength he had to complete the race.  He did this and finished a brilliant 4th place in the A string with an excellent time of 17.1.  He also competed in the 200m B string, finishing 4th in 26.1, a pb, and threw 20m95 in the A string Discus to finish 2nd.  Christian also competed in the U17B 4 x 100m, and Harrison and Patrick in the U17B 4 x 400m – both teams finishing in the top 3.  Not to be outdone by the boys, Katie Grant competed in the U17W 100m and 200m, finishing 3rd in the B 100m and 7th in the A 200m, and finished off running in the U20W 4 x100m and U17W 4 x 300m – a very busy afternoon for Katie.  The overall team scores are here with Team Sussex were well up in the finishing order.
